EMOTIONAL OR PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS - PSYCHIATRY
Emotional or psychological problems are usually cared for by Psychologists or Psychiatrists. Problems with Mental Health are classified into Neuroses (where you are aware that there is a problem) and Psychosis (where you are unaware or are aunable to have any insight into your condition). Common neurotic conditions include depression, drug additiction, anxiety and phobias/obsessive/compulsive disorders. Common psychotic conditions include schizophrenia and psychotic personality behavior.
Depression and Anxiety are probably the most common neurotic conditions that psychiatrists have to deal with. Some people are born with a tendency to become easily depressed (endogenous) and some find life events depressing (reactive). Treatment should always be managed by your general practitioner or psychiatrist. It must involve a combination of good communication about the problem, some form of cognitive behavioural therapy (making a plan to work your way out of depression) and where relevant, drug therapy.
